In a preview of whats to come tonight the Freshmen Pirates win again, beating Orange Grove 26-16, and remaining undefeated. The game pitted two great offenses, but according to the rules you can only have one winner; if you are one of the die hard freshmen followers, then you know who that is. The Pirates offense was explosive last night with touchdowns by Joe Moreno, Phillip Krupa, who had two, and Tommy Franks who scored on a drive that was kept alive by a fake punt run on 4th and 10. Head Coach and Masters of the Bon Combo J.D. Medrano, was just scoring at will. "I love to see the boys win as a group, you know, share the wealth and the glory. That's what its about, being there with your brothers, fighting for each other, and doing what it takes. Games like this always take me back to the days in Brownsville, Tx, when I was on the field with my brothers, giving it my all." Medrano who had the privilege of playing for his dad and Coach Boyd, the living legend of the the JV defensive secondary and what ever you need done on the special teams.
As for the defense, and shut out king of the year Robie Robbins, they meet up with a tough defense who was able to put up 16 points. Those 16 points was the second highest score against the Pirates this year. "What a match up, this was a tough group, but we had some big plays by some big tyme players." The big plays were made by Joe Moreno, Ean McPherson and Jarrett Solis who all had sacks, putting the total of sacks for the team up to 43. The secondary tore the Orange Grove QB up picking off one by Cody Davila and pass break ups by Leroy Burke and company. Krupa would end up with a big fumble recovery that would pretty much seal the deal for the Pirates. The Pirates remain undefeated and only have one more game this week vs Sinton for the second game and round two bout.
Don't forget that tonight the Pirates are here at the Ship for a game that will secure the Pirates as district champions, something that has not happened in almost 20 years. Kickoff is 7:30. Get there early, be loud, and stay for the celebrations!
